Here is EXACTLY why people shouldn’t have been so quick to move their gems from being hosted on RubyForge to GitHub. As if the namespacing issues weren’t enough, now they have decided to stop hosting gems altogether.
Old gems are being hosted for “at least one year” but no updates to those gems will be hosted on github meaning people will once again have to hunt to find the proper version of the gem they want to install.
Gemcutter is nice, but I have a feeling that GitHub’s endorsement of them might be a bad idea as users and developers aren’t going to want to keep changing gem providers.
I, for one, am glad I decided to keep all my gems hosted on RubyForge and not on GitHub. I guess my fears and hesitation have now been proven out.
