California Doesn’t Mind the Weed

California marijuana

By now, you may or may not have heard that all the fighters at UFC 76 passed their initial drug tests except for one: Kazuhiro Nakamura.

Nakamura tested positive for marijuana after his loss to Ryoto Machida by unanimous decision. Nakamura smokes weed? Really? I never would have guessed by his ring entrances from PrideFC or the nice pink umbrella he used on his way to the UFC’s octagon.

What I find troubling is the fact that Nakamura was only fined $500 and was suspended for 90 days. You may remember back in February when Nick Diaz tested positive for marijuana after a PrideFC event in Las Vegas the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) fined Diaz 20% of his fight purse and suspended him for 6 months.

Granted we are talking about the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) and not the NSAC, but shouldn’t there be some consistency among the punishments? At least the punishments should be a little closer in the level of severity.

Also, do note that the test for steroids and other performance enhancing drugs haven’t been returned yet. Only test results for “street” drugs were returned.
